He received commissions from the imperial family, the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie.
His portraits are sometimes distinguished by cool elegance and classical rigour. The subject’s character is reflected realistically in their physiognomy – as in the two portraits of publisher and art dealer Domenico (II) Artaria and his wife Anna Maria Artaria. Domenico is presented as a self-assured entrepreneur. In his left hand he holds a catalogue listing the printed works and paintings he offers for sale. In both paintings, Krafft skilfully renders the haptic quality of the garments.
The monochrome background and the light distribution land both protagonists a strong presence, emphasising their physical dimensions.

Peter Krafft Domenico (II) Artaria (1765–1823) 1816 Residenzgalerie Salzburg, 668 Donated by art historian Professor Edgar Hertlein, in memory of paediatrician Dr Irmgard Hertlein, née Zeiss. Peter Krafft Anna Maria Artaria, née Fontaine (1774–1845) 1818 Residenzgalerie Salzburg, 667 Donated by art historian Professor Edgar Hertlein, in memory of paediatrician Dr Irmgard Hertlein, née Zeiss.
