In his full-length Self-portrait Schider is sitting in his studio, looking at the paper he holds, which bears a red-chalk drawing of a nude, referring to one of the main features of his oeuvre: that of scientific illustrator. In 1896, the University of Basel awarded him an honorary doctorate in medicine and surgery for his dedication in this field. Schider chose his clothes according to practical considerations. The apron covered in paint stains and the rolled-up shirt sleeves tell of the intensive creative process.
