Salzburg once boasted a rich and varied cultural life. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the city on the Salzach River was a centre for music, theatre and dance north of the Alps.<\/p>\n
Until secularisation in 1803, the court of the prince-archbishops served as the centre of this cultural life.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Salzburg’s great musical tradition began long before the Salzburg Festival.<\/p>\n
Glamorous times, illustrious guests, magnificent celebrations and wonderful music, an international array of stars and highly acclaimed premieres were already a feature of the Prince-Archbishops’ reign.<\/p>\n
Their festivals took place in the 17th and 18th centuries at locations that still exist today, such as the state rooms of the Residenz, the cathedral and the public spaces around it.<\/p>\n
