Jacques d' Arthois (1613 - 1686)

D’Arthois’ early works show the influence of Lodewyk de Vadders (1605–1655). The guild register shows Jacques as an apprentice in 1625, as master in 1634. He married Marie Sampels, with whom he had five children. His mostly large-scale landscapes with religious or mythological scenes found favour with churches and monasteries. His reputation allowed him to establish his own workshop, where he trained six pupils, including his brother and one of his sons. He was tapestry cartoon designer of the city of Brussels. Between 1648 and 1652, the Bohemian etcher Wenceslaus Hollar made prints of eight of d’Arthois’ paintings.
