Franz Anton Maulbertsch (1724 - 1796)

His teachers were his father and probably Franz Joseph Spiegler (1691–1757); he then studied at the Vienna Academy. Paul Troger (1698–1762) influenced his early work. In 1750 he won the painting competition at the Vienna Academy, where he was later to become a member and a councillor. Empress Maria Theresa (1717–1780) appointed him as court chamber painter. He received commissions for ceiling frescos and paintings in Austria, Slovakia and Moravia, and from the Hungarian clergy.
