Gerard van Honthorst (1592 - 1656)
The young Honthorst trained with Abraham Blomaert until around 1606. Between 1610/12 and 1620 he worked in Rome for Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564–1637) and Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1577–1633). Influenced by the chiaroscuro painting of Caravaggio (1573–1610), his work enjoyed great success. In 1631 he was appointed court painter to the House of Orange in The Hague where, together with the Flemish painter Anthonis van Dyck (1500–1641), he dominated the artistic scene.
