Hans Temple (1857 - 1931)

Austrian portraitist and genre painter, Temple focused his interest on portraying contemporary artists in their studios; this group of works reflects the cult of the artist and the genius during that period. Temple studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with Carl Wurzinger, from 1879 to 1884 with Heinrich von Angeli, and also had tuition with Hans Canon, who was best man at Temple’s wedding in 1885. Temple travelled to Paris (where he trained for two years with Mihály von Munkácsy), London, Chicago, Russia and the Netherlands. Over a period of some 40 years, he was awarded several prizes showing lasting appreciation of his work – for example in 1891 the Silver State Medal or in 1928 the Gold Medal for Arts and Sciences.
