Grimmer Jakob (n.a. - 1590)

Jacob Grimmer (1525/1526 Antwerp – c 1590 Antwerp) Grimmer came from Brabant, and is thought to have trained with Gabriel Bouwens, Matthys Cock and Christian van Queborn. In 1546 he became a member of the De Violieren chamber of rhetoric, and the following year he was accepted into the St Luke's Guild in Antwerp. He painted exclusively landscapes, the staffage sometimes executed by Lucas von Valckenborch (1535/1536 –1597) or Gillis Mostaert (1528 –1598). Contemporaries admired his rolling landscapes with villages and farmhouses, reminiscent of the Brabant region. His works were highly regarded throughout Europe. Italian art theorist Giorgio Vasari (1511–1574) counted him among the best landscape painters. Grimmer often worked in series, many paintings being devoted to depictions of months or seasons.
