Johann Georg Weikert (n.a. - 1799)
Johann Georg Weikert was an Austrian portraitist of the Late Baroque period. He was a pupil of court painter Martin van Meytens (1695–1770), who had a lasting influence on his work. Weikert’s popularity is reflected by the considerable size of his clientèle; he painted portraits of Empress Maria Theresa and her husband Franz I, Emperor Joseph II, Queen Maria Carolina of Naples and Grand Duke Leopold of Tuscany. 1766/77 he produced pictures for Bishop Leopold von Spaur of Brixen, and 1777 for the Theresan Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. He also painted portraits of his democrat friends Andreas Riedel and Franz Hebenstreit, who were arrested for treason in 1794; these portraits are lost. Weikert’s portraits show the elegance and dignity of an epoch nearing its end.
