Peter Strudel (Strudl) (um/c 1660 - 1714)

Together with Martino Altomonte (1657–1745) and Johann Michael Rottmayr (1654–1730), Peter Strudel belongs to the first generation of artists who effected the breakthrough of Austrian baroque in the final quarter of the 17th century. Like Rottmayr, Strudel received a solid technical grounding between 1680 and 1685 in the Venice workshop of Munich painter Johann Carl Loth (1632–1698). After his return to Austria, Strudel worked for the imperial court. In 1688 he founded a private academy after the model of the "Accademia di San Luca" in Rome; in 1705 his academy was granted special privileges by Emperor Leopold I.
