Adriaen van de Velde (1636 - 1672)
A major representative of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting, as a child he already painted everything he could find. He probably received initial training from his father. His early work shows the influence of Paulus Potter, his later works that of the Italianate landscapes of Karel Dujardin and Pieter van Laer. Adriaen painted staffage figures in the works of Jacob van Ruisdael, Jan van der Heyden, Meindert Hobbema and Jan Wijnants. Presumably due to financial difficulties, he produced many etchings and drawings for the free market, as well as decorative designs for the borders of plans and maps.
