Landscape with Canal
Adriaen van de Velde (1636 - 1672)
Framesize 47.00 x 56.60 x 3.00 cm
His "Landscape with Canal" is dated 1663. 159 years later, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller copied it for study purposes in the Czernin gallery, which was open to the public.
A herd of goats and sheep with dogs enliven the foreground of the landscape. Bushes and pollard willows form a barrier to the lower-lying grazing meadows with cattle. The canal is lined by pavilions evidently belonging to the houses behind. The "division of labour" is noticeable: on the left a milkmaid is busy; in contrast, guarded by the dog sitting beside him, a shepherd lies on his stomach, dreaming the day away.
