Gerrit (Gerard) Dou (1613 - 1675)
Son of a manufacturer of stained glass, in 1628 Dou became one of the first pupils of the still young Rembrandt, in whose early work he found the refined style of painting which he was to retain all his life. His smallscale, precisely detailed pictures were much sought-after by collectors from the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie throughout Europe, aking him one of the most successful painters of his time. The Swedish ambassador paid him handsomely for the right of first refusal for all his works.
