Philips Wouwerman (1619 - 1668)

In the 17th century, Wouwerman was one of the bestknown, highest-paid and most productive painters in the Netherlands. His earliest work is dated 1639, his last in the year of his death. He probably trained with his father, history painter Pouwels Joostsz., and with Frans Hals. In 1638 he spent a short time in Hamburg, in order to marry according to the Catholic rite. Here he worked with history painter Evert Decker. Back in Haarlem, Wouwerman joined the Guild of St Luke in 1640. He trained numerous pupils as well as working as an art dealer and estate agent. After his death, his paintings were auctioned on 7 May 1670.
