Rudolf Ribarz (1848 - 1904)
Ribarz studied from 1864 to 1869 at the Vienna Academy with Albert Zimmermann (1808–1888), who inspired his students to appreciate unspoilt nature and to paint plein air. His fellow-students included Emil Jakob Schindler (1842–1892) and Robert Russ (1847–1922). In 1868 Ribarz first showed a picture at the opening of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. During the 1870s he took study trips to Italy, Belgium and Holland; from 1876 to 1892 he lived in Paris, where his work was admired by the local artists – even Auguste Rodin purchased one of his pictures. From 1892 he taught flower-painting at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. A nervous disorder gradually restricted his work.
