Although Ute Lehmann soon departed from making bowls and other vessels, and turned to sculpture, in 2002 she made four bowls, commissioned as plant pots for the exhibition "Tulpen, Schönheit und Wahn" [tulips, beauty and madness] held in the Residenzgalerie from 22 March to 30 June 2002. Lehmann varied the form and colour of the four objects, also achieving different visual and haptic qualities by giving the surfaces a smooth or structured finish. The round-bodied "Black and white" bowl tapers towards the base. Its surface calls to mind marbled structures.
