Hinterholzer’s small, intimate landscape details show the influence of English artists such as John Constable (1776–1837) and the masters of the Barbizon school, whose works he had seen during his time at the Munich Academy. These highly atmospheric pictures, mainly motifs from the immediate vicinity of Salzburg, show quite unspectacular views: moorland, water-meadows, avenues, rivers or lakes.
The artist has applied the paint, sometimes thickly, with rapid brushstrokes. There are no continuous areas or elaborate details; much is merely suggested. The cloudscapes and the interplay of light and shade contribute greatly to the overall impression. Hinterholzer’s style puts him amongst the Austrian "Stimmungsimpressionisten" [mood impressionists] who, from the mid-1870s evoked a reality determined by emotions.
