Anton Faistenberger, a landscape painter born in Salzburg, spent time in Italy during the 1680s, and visited the workshop of the Munich painter Johann Carl Loth (1632–1698) in Venice. He took as models the Ideal Landscapes by Salvator Rosa (1615–1673), Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665), Claude Lorrain (1600–1682) and Gaspard Dughet (1615–1675), which in later years he increasingly combined with Flemish and Dutch influences – evident in the small-scale Fishermen at a Mountain Stream. The mountain torrent cascading over a rugged, dark brown rock face is reminiscent of the dramatic paintings by Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael (1628/1629–1682).
