In the 19th century, painters discovered this lake in the Bavarian Ramsau. We are reminded of them today by the "Malerwinkel" [painters’ corner] and the "Ramsauer Maler-Rundwanderweg", a circular trail leading from the centre of the village through the Zauberwald [enchanted woods] to the Hintersee and to their favourite standpoints. At that time, representatives of the Munich and Viennese schools gathered to form a painters’ colony; they included Carl Rottmann, Wilhelm Busch, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller and Friedrich Gauermann.
Here Hansch shows "St Anthony’s Chapel" on the western bank of the lake, recognisable by its hipped roof and round-arched portal. Surrounded by woods and meadows, it is the sole indication of human existence against the background of the majestic mountains. Rising behind the Halsalm and the Teufelskopf is the Mühlsturzhorn, part of the Reiter Alm. Immediately in front of the chapel, delicate yellow waves in the otherwise greenish lake water reflect the flames on the roof and in the surrounding woods.
