Park of Villa d’Este
Framesize 73.60 x 56.30 x 6.50 cm
A variety of plants and architectural elements prevent the rays of the southern sun from penetrating the park landscape. Here is no landscape bathed in light. This detail of the park is striking in the alternation of pronounced zones of light and shade. Shaded by trees, a path in dark colours leads to the sunny terrace, the access accentuated with a narrow, bright brush-stroke indicating shimmering sunlight. Roses and leaves provide scattered splashes of colour, presaging Impressionism. The many petals lying under the rose-bush in full bloom serve as a reminder of the transience of life.
