During the reign of Prince-Archbishop Colloredo, two overdoors by Fidanza were listed in the 1802 and 1803 inventories, though with no purchase reference. Probably commissioned through an art agent in Italy, the companion pieces depict contrasting scenes – day and night. The verso of Seascape is signed Gregorio Fidanza Mancini [?] fecit. The artist has used light colours to portray the scene in a seascape with several bays. In the diffuse light, fortifications on promontories and houses emerge on the shores, illustrating the people of the region, who live by seafaring and fishing. Fishermen are drawing in their nets on the shore and in their boat. A couple in the foreground are emptying their net, beside them a basket brimming with fish. The blazing fire betokens the next meal.
