View of the Hoher Göll from the Rossfeld
Josef Michael Mayburger (1814 - 1908)
Framesize 131.40 x 174.50 x 10.00 cm
According to an old label on the back of the frame, the titles are "Untersberg" and "Rossalm bei Berchtesgaden".
The view takes the eye from a meadow on a high promontory over hazy valleys in shadow, to a massif bathed in the light of the evening sun.
Mayburger’s two small works "View of the Hoher Göll from the Rossfeld" and "View of the Hoher Göll at sunset" (Salzburg Museum inv. no. 60-30 and inv. no. 12584-2010) are evidently studies for the large-scale oil painting. The arrangement of the trees and shadows in the rocky Alpine region and the background massif in the "Hoher Göll from the Rossfeld" appear to have a direct link with the painting in the Residenzgalerie. The rendering of the river valley on the left is different.
