Apple Trees in Goisern

In his youth, the trips Rudolf von Alt took with his father Jakob (1789– 1872) included Salzburg and the Salzkammergut. In his advanced years, from 1899, he chose to spend the summer months in readily accessible Goisern, where he rented accommodation with master carpenter Josef Putz in Lasern.
His delicate, already modern-leaning late works, such as "Apple Trees in Goisern", show views of the Ramsau mountains and orchards. Paths and meadows are interpreted more as two-dimensional colour-fields than as lines of perspective. Individual forms – as the row of trees along the lefthand path, with their merging colours – are sometimes only suggested. The front row of apple trees, with their vertical trunks and sparse crowns, provide an attractive contrast. Wet-on-wet application gives a blurred effect and contributes to the airy atmosphere.
