Franz Barbarini (1804 - 1873)

Franz Barbarini’s œuvre of romantic, realistic landscapes in oils, watercolours and engravings, shows the influence of works by Johann Fischbach (1797–1871) and Thomas Ender (1793–1875). Barbarini grew up in humble circumstances. He attended the sculpture class of Johann Nepomuk Schaller (1777–1842) at the Vienna Academy from 1824 to 1826 before training in Josef Kempel’s sculpture studio. He initially worked as a gold and silver engraver, but soon devoted himself entirely to landscape painting. Study trips took him to the Austrian Alps (Salzburg and Salzkammergut) and Switzerland. Cardinal Friedrich Schwarzenberg was his patron.
