Barbarini shows the market-place as a tranquil, rural idyll. Three women in Pinzgau traditional costume chat by the oversized wooden water trough. A cow and a goat on the rough, overgrown ground emphasise the rural character. In contrast to his free treatment of the central motif, Barbarini depicts the surrounding buildings with precision: the courthouse on the right, then the brewery with its shingled roof, the flying buttress to the former meat market, and the parish church with its mediaeval stone tower and the old court linden-tree. He includes the snow-covered Kitzsteinhorn as a striking point of reference in the Zell landscape, although it is actually not visible from here.
This is a subtle watercolour in delicate hues, with just a few dashes of colour – a typical example of a realistic Biedermeier landscape.
