Hans Makart (1840 - 1884)
Makart first received encouragement from Johann Fischbach and Josef Mayburger. In the preparatory painting class at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he was graded as untalented. From 1860 until 1865 he studied with Karl Theodor von Piloty at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In 1869, Emperor Franz Joseph I invited him to Vienna, where he was provided with accommodation and a studio at the expense of the state. In 1872/73 a new, public studio was built for him. Makart produced history paintings and a few still lifes, and from 1870 he painted portraits of Viennese high society. In 1879 he designed a pageant organised to celebrate the silver wedding anniversary of the imperial couple Franz Joseph I and Elisabeth of Bavaria.
