The river in the foreground is the Saalach, with 103 kilometres the second longest in today’s Province of Salzburg, and a tributary of the Salzach. Two almost hidden farms line the river, above which towers the Kreuzreifhorn, the most prominent mountain in the view from Lofer over to the Loferer Steinberge. The distinctive peak is framed by the Vorder-, Mittleres and Grosses Ochsenhorn and the Breit-, Mitter-, Rot- and Seehorn. Behind the watercourse rise the imposing cliffs of the Horn Group in the northern limestone Alps – the culmination of the staggered rock-faces, from the narrow stream to the impenetrable rock formation. In contrast to the cliffs above the river, the slopes are not always typical of Ender’s characteristic style. He may possibly have made a copy from one of his own very popular watercolours, or commissioned another artist to do so.
