Alt was aged 77 when he painted the "View of the Rudolskai", as shown by the date "4. Oct. 889". Several of his study trips took the artist to Salzburg – first in 1828 with his father, then in 1829/30, 1832 and 1834.
The Rudolfskai, named after the son of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth, runs on the left bank of the Salzach from the Rudolfsplatz to the Staatsbrücke [the main bridge].
Alt painted several views of Salzburg, in various scenes and formats. Here the eye travels from the Salzach up to the snow-covered peak of the Untersberg, past town-houses, churches (Collegiate, Franciscan and St Peter’s), the town hall and the Mönchsberg. Grey clouds give the impression of a rainy day. Shutters, as well as horses and cattle for transport, were part of the townscape in those days.
