Italian Landscape around Olevano
Framesize 62.00 x 73.20 x 8.30 cm
In 1856, Anton Romako set off for Rome to earn money. The typical costume figures of the Roman Campagna, in the tradition of Louis-Léopold Robert (1794-1835), were popular with international travellers. This was the most successful period for Romako’s work, when he would sign his paintings (as this one) often adding Roma. To the east of the Eternal City lies the picturesque mountain commune of Olevano Romano. From the early 19th century, the region was established as a painting “hot spot” by countless artists attracted by the beauty of the region. A pastoral scene in the rocky foreground
shows a young man tickling the nose of a sleeping girl with a straw. Nearby, a woman carries a pitcher on her head. In the landscape behind, a ruin towers on a distant mountain range.
