This is typical of the works Romako painted during his 20 years spent in and around Rome. Mountain town and landscape are reminiscent of Olevano Romano. The standing figure of The Gleaners links the two halves of the picture – the yellow tones of the cornfield in the foreground and the blue-greys of the mountains and the fortress
township in the background landscape. Costume figures of the Roman Campagna were an extremely popular motif in those days, appearing in many scenes. Single ears of corn trickle down from the small sheaf, and the field is framed by poppies. The 2010 catalogue of works lists paintings and prints on this theme, as well as a study on the wayside shrine.
