Typical features of Flemish still lifes include the cheese in a wicker basket, the Rhenish stoneware jug, the broken bread, the artichoke (in the 17th century imported from South America) and the Venetian wine-glasses. Light falls in from the left, making for reflections such as that of the window in one of the glasses or that of the fruit and nuts on the metal plates.
