By the Königssee

The "Malerwinkel", so popular among 19th century artists, lies on the north bank of the Königssee. In countless sketches, they captured picturesque motifs of the fjord-like lake, and used these as a source of inspiration for their wild, romantic paintings.
Artistic freedom played a considerable role. Thus Hansch dispensed with topographical accuracy in favour of effect, exaggerating reality. Here he shows an actually quite unspectacular steep cliff, which takes up a good two-thirds of the left half of the painting. Leafy and dead trees enhance the effect of the rugged, bare rock. Rising at the head of the valley is the pyramidal peak of the Schönfeldspitze. This part of the Berchtesgaden Alpine range lies in the Province of Salzburg.
Under the steep cliff wall, a rowing-boat glides over the crystal-clear water, in which the landscape is reflected.
