The charming portrait of his mother, Katharina Makart, née Rüssemayer (1820–1901), painted by the very young Hans Makart (1840–1884), is a typical Biedermeier painting, showing her corkscrew curls and the landscape with the Fortress in the background.14 The relaxed style of his later works is not yet evident. Katharina Makart makes eye contact with the viewers, interacting with them.
