Marie Einsle, daughter of the artist Anton Einsle (1801–1871), makes eye contact with the viewers, interacting with them. Her delicate features and pale pink complexion look very lifelike, contrasting on the one hand with the white headscarf, and on the other, with the upper body which is only suggested, the primed canvas showing through. The mood of the work is defined by balanced tonality and lighting. Anton Einsle was a sought-after portraitist, capturing as he did the essence of his subjects. The background, in iridescent brown tones, is applied with rapid brush-strokes.
