Concert Rehearsal in the Palace
Johann Georg Platzer (1704 - 1761)
Framesize 44.30 x 57.50 x 4.50 cm
Baroque or light-hearted Rococo paintings such as "Concert Rehearsal in the Palace" by Johann Georg Platzer (1704–1761), which shows a musical courtly gathering, deal in a genial manner with the topic of the Five Senses. The principle motivation is the sheer sensual pleasure in depicting a festivity with music and singing, spiced with the erotic touches popular in the Rococo period and in 17th-century Dutch genre painting.
Viewed similarly to the Dutch paintings, here all five senses are represented: hearing as the main subject; sight, in the various glances of the company and the many paintings; touch, in the handling of the instruments; taste and smell in the wine and fruit. Going a step further in interpretation, we would find two of the seven deadly sins: lust and gluttony.
