Heinrich von Angeli, then as now highly esteemed in England, presents the 32-year-old Archduke Ludwig Viktor of Austria in close-up frontal view. The Archduke is portrayed as a private citizen, even wearing a posy of violets on his lapel. Although his social and dynastic position was far less subject to protocol than that of his elder brother, he seems to set store by his noble origins, since just visible, but unmistakable under his necktie, is the Order of the Golden Fleece.
