Portrait of a Lady with Flowers and Fruit (Allegory of Autumn; Flora with Flowers)
Framesize 174.20 x 150.20 x 7.50 cm
Similarly to its companion piece, "Portrait of a Lady with Flowers and Fruit" is listed also as "Allegory of Autumn". Again, a young woman personifies the season, with flowers and particularly grapes, which are harvested in autumn. The ripe orange in her hand is a further sign of the advancing year, contrasting with the orange blossom in the "Allegory of Spring". In Cesare Ripa's "Iconologia", the four seasons are "each well provided with its corresponding fruits / according to the difference of the season". Grapes are an attribute of Autumn. The colourful flowers and fruits contrast with the dark tones of the bushes. On the right, a view of a park landscape with a palace forms the background.
