FAQs on the building project „DomQuartier NEU
Expansion with Visitor Center and IUVAVUM – Salzburg Archaeology Museum“
The building project “DomQuartier NEU – Expansion with Visitor Center and IUVAVUM – Salzburg Archaeology Museum” marks a significant step in the further development of the DomQuartier. The aim is to improve the quality of the visitor experience, create new cultural offerings, and make Salzburg’s historical treasures even more accessible. In the following FAQs, you will find answers to the most important questions about the planned measures, the construction phase, and the impact on your visit.
The DomQuartier is the very heart of the Salzburg World Heritage site. The planned visitor centre will offer improved service as well as further exhibitions in the Museum. The archaeological collections dating from Roman times will now be on permanent display in the east wing of the basement floor in the Residenz, as the IUVAVUM Archaeology Museum. Comprehensive understanding of this special place will be enhanced by digital communication.
In addition to the new visitor centre, the archaeological excavation site under the Cathedral Square will be accessible (barrier-free) all year round. In the new Archaeology Museum, the history of the ancient town on the banks of the River Salzach will be told through selected original finds from excavations in Salzburg. With a fascinating journey through time, for young and old, we will bring to life in Salzburg’s underground the Iuvavum of 2,000 years ago.
The project also brings necessary improvements to the climatic conditions for some of the Residenzgalerie’s most valuable paintings and art-works, owned by the Province of Salzburg. Further measures include the installation of a new shop in the state-rooms, together with improvements in the security infrastructure and in visitor direction, both from the exterior into the courtyard and within the Museum. The conversion will include the redesign of the University office premises in the north wing and renovation and repurposing of further premises in the upper storey of the Residenz. The construction work is intended to show the building better to advantage and to make it more attractive to visitors.
Construction site set-up begins in the fourth quarter of 2025. Construction work on the ground floor and basement for the visitor centre and the IUVAVUM Archaeology Museum will start in 2026.
Construction work will run from the fourth quarter of 2025 until at least the end of the second quarter of 2028. Re-opening is planned for the fourth quarter of 2028.
There will be access to St Peter’s Museum, Lange Galerie, Cabinet of Curiosities, Cathedral Museum, organ loft and North Oratory, with changing special exhibitions, as well as to the terrace above the Cathedral arcade. For the period between 2026 and 2028, our communications team is planning a varied programme focusing on the spiritual domain of the DomQuartier.
However, the Residenzgalerie will be closed from 30 September 2025. Due to noise pollution from necessary underground construction work, the protective measures required for premises and objects, and the renovation of the office premises, the state-rooms will also have to be closed from 12 January.
