The most popular paintings from the Residenzgalerie collection

The Best-sellers exhibition presents the most popular paintings from the Residenzgalerie collection. Viewers’ favourites were determined using the access data recorded for the collection from July 2022 to October 2025 and the sales figures for art postcards during this period.

The Best-sellers presentation is organised according to the five genres of painting that evolved over the centuries, an academic distinction being made between genres with “high” or “low” prestige. From the 17th until well into the 19th century, history painting was considered the most distinguished genre. It was followed by portrait painting, then the “lower classes” of genre painting, landscape and still life.

However, purchasers frequently had (and still have) a different opinion. This trend is also reflected in the access data and sales figures for art postcards.
