View of the Cathedral Square from the Cathedral arcade terrace

Immerse yourself in the heart of the World Heritage site and discover the baroque lines of sight in and around the DomQuartier

Look forward to a thrilling guided tour which not only highlights the impressive architecture of the DomQuartier, but also offers fascinating insights into the history of Salzburg. Learn more about the Residenz of the prince-archbishops, St Peter’s Abbey and the Cathedral Museum.

“The entire town is a stage”: it was Max Reinhardt himself who thus characterised Salzburg. His choice of the Cathedral Square for the staging of Jedermann was not simply arbitrary – for here, in the heart of the World Heritage site, the power and influence of the former prince-archbishops and the development of the town from a monastic nucleus to the “Rome of the North” come vividly to life.

In the course of the tour, the focus shifts from exterior to interior. The baroque state-rooms and the Cathedral evoke the history of the archiepiscopal Residenz. Local history and intangible cultural heritage – such as the legacy of Mozart, whose life and work are closely linked with the DomQuartier – fill the architectural setting with the ambience of its days of glory. The Cathedral treasure and the exhibition in St Peter’s Abbey complete the complex picture of the prince-archbishopric.
