Portrait of a ruling prince-archbishop
This oval portrait of Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton Harrach, completed in 1710, is the only surviving picture from a series of nine family portraits commissioned from Vienna court painter Frans van Stampart. Harrach considered the portrait an excellent likeness. It shows him seated in an armchair, wearing the red apparel appropriate to his rank, and a white lace-trimmed surplice. He was the first Salzburg prince-archbishop to be portrayed wearing the fashionable wig. He is engaged in his correspondence, as shown by the letters on the table and the missive in his hand. The deep red velvet curtain emphasises his high rank. The building and the sculpture in the background probably refer to his instructions for the redesign of Mirabell Palace.
