An icon of mediæval art treasure

The Cross of St Rupert, on long-term loan from the Parish Church of Bischofshofen, is the oldest and most important treasure of the Cathedral Museum and a major masterpiece of 8th-century European art. Because no reliable data on its creation have survived, scholars have so far had to rely on conjecture.

In the course of urgently needed conservation measures, since 2024 all components of the cross—the wooden core, metal coverings, and glass inlays—have been subjected to scientific analysis under the direction of the Federal Monuments Office.

After conservation is completed, the cross will be presented in renewed splendor, together with all research findings, as part of an exhibition.
