Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau and his coat of arms
The coat of arms at the narrow end of the room is that of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, founder of the present Residenz. In 1592, on his own initiative, to emphasise his high rank, he expanded and improved his coat of arms. Ever since, his family’s ancestral coat of arms has featured an orb in the centre. The sides show a tall hat with ostrich feathers and a rearing lion before a slanted beam. At the top is the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Salzburg, with a lion and a tripartite shield.
The stucco medallion was executed together with other decorations in 1611/12, probably by Elia Castello and his colleagues. After Wolf Dietrich was deposed, his successor, Marcus Sitticus, had parts of the decoration removed. His own coat of arms with the ibex is on the opposite side of the corridor.
