The ceiling fresco in the Schöne Galerie
Each of the narrow ends of this room shows two women sitting under a portal. They represent the four continents known at the time: Europe, Asia, America and Africa. America is shown as a fair-skinned warrior wearing a feather headdress and holding a bow and a quiver of arrows. The parrot emphasises her exotic origin.
The dark-skinned woman under a round raffia parasol represents Africa. She is wrapped in colourful shawls and holds several strings of beads.
Depicted at the other end of the gallery are Europe in armour, with spear and shield, and Asia with turban and thurible. According to the world view of the Baroque period, Europe enjoyed a pre-eminent position among the continents.
These pictures are part of the ceiling fresco painted by Johann Michael Rottmayr in 1710/11, on the commission of Prince-Archbishop Franz Anton Harrach. In the centre of the fresco, the Harrach family is glorified as patrons of the arts and sciences.
