A special set of seats
This armchair is part of a set of luxury furniture purchased in Paris around 1780 by Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. The items were crafted there in the Classical style by Henri Jacob, a renowned cabinet-maker. The solid wood frame of the chair is gilded. The rectangular seat and the back are upholstered; the pink and red woollen fabric is decorated with large bouquets, and the armrests are covered in patterned upholstery. For the decoration, Jacob drew on ancient forms, such as acanthus leaves and pearl mouldings. During that period, this kind of furniture was in demand at all the European courts, since the Parisian cabinet-makers were regarded as the leading craftsmen.
