Salzburg once boasted a rich and varied cultural life. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the city on the Salzach River was a centre for music, theatre and dance north of the Alps.

Until secularisation in 1803, the court of the prince-archbishops served as the centre of this cultural life.

A unique musical journey of discovery

Salzburg’s great musical tradition began long before the Salzburg Festival.

Glamorous times, illustrious guests, magnificent celebrations and wonderful music, an international array of stars and highly acclaimed premieres were already a feature of the Prince-Archbishops’ reign.

Their festivals took place in the 17th and 18th centuries at locations that still exist today, such as the state rooms of the Residenz, the cathedral and the public spaces around it.

Mozart at work

First teaser for our short documentary film ‘Mozart. The Sound of Salzburg’. Discover Mozart’s workplace in the DomQuartier Salzburg: the Residenz, its rooms, its sounds – retold for today:

With the residence and cathedral area, the DomQuartier Salzburg thus encompasses historically significant musical venues.

The prince-archbishop’s court musicians – such as Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Georg Muffat, Antonio Caldara, Leopold and Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, and Michael Haydn – composed for these premises and also performed here themselves. They were their immediate professional sphere of activity, their workplace.

The DomQuartier illuminates this glorious musical history of Salzburg at the original performance venues. This is a unique asset and provides a vivid impression of the lively festivities that once took place there.

The DomQuartier is thus the most important authentic Mozart site in Salzburg alongside his birthplace and residence.

Salzburg was also awarded UNESCO World Heritage status because of its significance in music history: ‘(vi) Salzburg’s connection to the arts is remarkable, especially to music in the person of its famous son Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.’

The DomQuartier, as the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Salzburg, is committed to this great musical tradition and gives music the importance it deserves.
