The archiepiscopal court musicians – including Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Georg Muffat, Mozart father and son and Michael Haydn – composed works specifically for performance in these premises, and themselves took part. They were their “workplaces”.

You can still hear their music today where it was once heard – via audio stations and video recordings in the state-rooms of the Residenz, but also as part of a music tour.

Overview of the contents of the app

The prologue “Music Everywhere” outlines the music-historical subject area and provides initial general information – starting with the reorganisation of the “Musica” by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau.

In the Carabinierisaal, the early opera of the 17th century is discussed. Orfeo, which was staged on 10 February 1614, went down in music history as the first opera performance outside Italy.

Via Music App in the footsteps of the prince archbishops

The Knights’ Hall is reserved for music theatre of the 18th century, with a special focus on Mozart’s sacred singspiel Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots KV 35 (1767) and his serenata Il re pastore KV 208 (1775), which were first performed here under his direction.

In the adjoining conference room, the Musik_App is dedicated to chamber music of the
18th century chamber music, with examples of gallant society music for exclusive courtly evening entertainments. Here, in 1763, W. A. Mozart’s concert debut at the Salzburg court took place here; Prince Archbishop Hieronymus Count Colloredo, who was a good violinist, played here with his musicians, including duos for violin and viola composed for him.

The station in the Ante Camera allows insights into the position and situation of the prince-archbishop’s court musicians.

In the Audience Room, the theme is the staging of rulers, the pleasures of the table and the music of the table, as well as the importance of the court trumpeters as bearers of princely representation and power.

In the Schönen Galerie, the Musik_App provides information about the era of court theatre from 1720 onwards, with a special focus on the works written for Salzburg by the imperial court composer and vice-chapel master Antonio Caldara.

In the Throne Hall and the White Hall you can hear ornate and original instrumental music of the 17th and 18th centuries, including works by Georg Muffat and Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, with whom Salzburg reached an international musical level.

In the North Oratory of Salzburg Cathedral, church music of the 17th and 18th centuries is dealt with in four sub-sections, which was adapted to the special architectural-acoustic conditions of the cathedral, ensured an effective manifestation of the glory of God, but also provided the appropriate sound cosmos for the magnificent princely representation.

In the St. Peter’s Long Gallery and in the music room of the St. Peter’s Museum, the Musik_App tells about the St. Peter’s “Musica” – among other things about W. A. Mozart and Michael Haydn, the final music in connection with the famous “Basettl” or about the Claviorganum from 1591 acquired by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, one of the most valuable and oldest objects in the DomQuartier.

More Than You Might Believe…

What do terms such as “morals” or “ethics” mean to us today? Where do we find points of reference for correct behaviour? Is there even right and wrong behaviour? Or, to put it simply: what does it mean to live in a community (such as a religious order)? These are all questions which interest today’s young people but often are only poorly answered. On this tour of the DomQuartier, we would like to ask ourselves such philosophical questions and see if something like art can provide answers. Can art mediate between faith and knowledge? Additionally, you will discover that knowledge of the development of art and intellectual life in Salzburg means more than just interest in faith and spirituality. It teaches us the connection between education, science, religion and culture.
This tour for kids and young adults is an exciting addition to religion lessons and preparation for first communion and confirmation.

Duration: ca. 2 hours
Ages: 8–16 years
Price for school groups: € 3.50 (per person)
Price: admission plus € 80 tour fee (when booked individually)

Kids Tours of the DomQuartier

Spurensuche im DomQuartier

Children can get a closer look at the life of the prince archbishops in the Salzburg court. There are entertaining activities and plenty of mysterious things to discover. An interactive book told by the much esteemed court dwarf Franz von Meichelboeck leads kids from one station to the next. Where can the prince archbishop be? And which treasure chest is opened by the golden key? An exciting journey of discovery through the Salzburg Residenz Palace with its state rooms and gallery, the Salzburg Cathedral and the Cathedral Museum, as well as the exhibition rooms in St. Peter’s Abbey, awaits you!

Duration: 2 hours
Age: 5–10 years
Price for school groups: € 3.50 (per person)
Price: admission plus € 80 tour fee (when booked individually)

Kids Tour: Tracking in the DomQuartier

The story of court dwarf Franz von Meichelboeck on the search for the prince archbishop leads children on a fun, exciting tour of the DomQuartier. From station to station, there are little activities to master, a “found key” requires initiative and leads to the solution of the puzzling story with the last lost pages of an interactive book. During this tour, kids get insight into the strictly governed life of the Salzburg court and learn about specially-chosen pieces of the collection. Topics such as etiquette, piety and faith, wealth and pageantry are explained with kid-friendly materials. Kids can take home the accompanying map and stamped pendant as a souvenir of their expedition.

Duration: ca. 2 hours
Ages: 5–10 years
Price for school groups: € 3.50 (per person)

Young Adult Tour: The 4 from the DomQuartier

During a tour of four DomQuartier institutions, teens and young adults get a better idea of the life of the prince archbishops, their position of power and their love of collecting. Architectural history is one of the focuses of this tour, as well as the artistic decor of the Salzburg Residenz Palace and Salzburg Cathedral. Thanks to info-cards, young adults get plenty of information about these architectural topics where they can then be “experts” about the corresponding place. After each station, a QR-code quiz tests visitors on what they have just learned. The juxtaposition between life in the Benedictine monastery and the prince archbishops’ claim to power, between piety and pomp, offers plenty to talk about. A closing discussion with roles handed out to visitors leads us back to the future with the question: how could you make use of the DomQuartier differently?

Duration: ca. 2 hours
Ages: 11–18 years
Price for school groups: € 3.50 (per person)

29 Programmes For Children and Young Adults

At the centre of the tours and workshops is the communicative and active discussion with history, architecture, art and religion. The DomQuartier is a place of learning and communication of knowledge, as well as an encounter with Salzburg’s history where aesthetic experiences are made possible.

In exciting workshops, young people are encouraged to be active and can let their creativity run free, making it possible to transform their own ideas in various ways.

In the footsteps of the prince archbishops

Tour with a Focus on St. Peter

The extremely rich art collection of St. Peter’s Benedictine monastery is comprised of approximately 40,000 exhibits. The museum is divided into three focuses: St. Peter and art, St. Peter and music, and St. Peter in history and constitution.
The newly designed Museum of St. Peter, in the so-called “Wallistrakt” of the old archbishops’ residence (the former “Hofbogengebäude”), displays artistic treasures from the abbey’s collection. Some are being made open to the public for the first time, while others have not been open to the public since the 1982 State Exhibition. As in most monastery collections, medieval church treasures make up the basis of St. Peter’s collection. The religious life form of a monastery and the celebration of holy liturgy require certain equipment and textiles which are preserved in the sacristy and later in the treasure chest due to their value, which is not just material. Starting very early, these objects were recorded in the so-called jewel directories, many of which are preserved in the monastery’s archive. One of the oldest listings in which the Rupertus and Limoges pastorals, for example, are mentioned dates back to 1462. An additional source is account books which give information about the sometimes costly purchases, such as some by the abbot Rupert V. Keutzl who ordered numerous valuable tools and jewels.
